Describe the Sheet Like a Map
When asking AI for an Excel formula, describe the columns, example rows, and expected output. A request such as 'write an IF formula' is vague; a request with column names and examples is much more reliable.
Include whether your Excel uses commas or semicolons as formula separators, and mention if you are using Microsoft 365 functions such as XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE, or LET.
Give One Example Input and Output
A small example prevents many formula mistakes. If column A contains dates, column B contains order values, and column C should return a status, show one row that should pass and one row that should fail.
After receiving a formula, ask for a plain-English explanation. This helps you debug it later and makes the sheet easier to maintain.
Check Edge Cases
Before using a formula in production, test blank cells, duplicate values, text that looks like numbers, and dates stored as text. Many spreadsheet errors come from data shape, not formula syntax.
For recurring reports, document the formula next to the sheet or keep a small changelog. Future you will appreciate the extra minute.
